SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.

[S?BCXAX TO THE STAR.'] AUCKLAND, August 6. Tho 'Herald' this morning, referring to the suggestion of tho President of the British Association of Science that the State should expend two millions yearly for the investigation and attempted, destruction of diseases, says: —lf the State did take it up it would be but another stone in the great edifice of national, education which is rising in every civilised land. It would be the crowning stone of the great national educational'system. We do not doubt that if tho New Zealand public would but consider the question and remember how many thousands of pounds we waste, and how much every individual owes L to work of the scientific investigator, there j 'would be entire approval for the establishI ment in each of the collegiate- centres of tho j 'New Zealand University of a State-paid chai j of original research with necessary' scientilic 'equipment. The colony has led in various experiments, but in none worthier or surer of world-wide imitation. By doing so we should be playing our fair part in the alleviation of human pain and suffering, in the prolongation of human life, in the scientific conquest of our islands and their, mysteries, in the exploitation of our hidden treasures, and in the general advancement not only of our own people but of the whole civilised world, for ah these things follow upon the heels of t scientific research.
