CATLINS-TAHAKOPA RAILWAY LEAGUE.

An ordinary meeting of the Executive of the Catlins Railway League was held yesterday afternoon. Mr R. Chisholm was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs D. M. Fea, W. Taylor, M. Cohen, J. B. Waters, J. A. Millar and T. K. Sidey, M.H.R.s, R. Wilson, H. Moss. Mr W. Houston, a settler from Tahakopa, was also present at tho meeting. The Chairman explained how a misunderstanding had arisen as' to the distances given in his speech at the annual meeting. He gave the figures in detail, as supplied by the Public Works Department, showing that the total distance from the present terminus to Table Hill is nine miles. Mr Chisholm also said that he bad made inquiries of th© department as to the progress of the work, and was assured that it was going on satisfactorily. Mr Ussher had explained to him the difficulty of getting ballasting material now that Clutha gravel was not readily obtainable. The department had spent £SOO on procuring an up-to-date crushing plant, eo that they might utilise the material got from the "large rock cutting on the Huipapa section. If there should be a little delay in opening that section they would know that it was caused by that cutting and quarry, and that the work there would be of great value later on. Satisfactory reports received from the League's agents.

Mr Cohen sukl he thought it was true that they gave th© League its proper title. To avoid confusion with the Catlins-Sea-ward line, they ought to call this League " The Catlins-Tahakopa Railway League." It wau resolved accordingly. Mr Cohen also made special reference to the consistent attitude of Mr Millar, M.H.R., in reference to the railway. Coming events cast their shadows before, and he thought he might safely say that the League would soon have on the Cabinet one of the warmest friends in the person of Mr Millar.
