River height, 6ft 2in; hard frost. Golden Runs improving. Golden Beds declining, inquiry for Hartleys at par after some neglect, and a firm tone about Otago ecnp, with a slacker feeling about Rise and Shine—this pretty well sums up the " movements" on the market as disclosed by this morning's quotes. Developments at the Big River mine and at the Lady Roxburgh, Molyneux Kohinoor, and Riley's* Beach claims are being awaited, but speculators are not building up great hopes in advance, evidently. Meanwhile the frost on the goldfields is persuading the Molyneux inch by inch to confine itself within smaller compass. Strange to say, not much has been heard of drift lately." Maybe the mosquito fleet—to borrow a nautical term for the gorge dredges—will soon be able to let their ladders down to bottom and keep them there without travelling silt forcing them to release their hold. Many of these famine-stricken mosquitoes have already settled over the patch they intend to prospect. Once their proboscides penetrate the protecting skin of overburden all will be pleased to hear of their striking good, rich blood underneath, and gorging away to heart's content. There are emptv thoraces to be filled. Further failure would prompt the feeling that they are insect pests, along with the regret that they are not migratory. If that were the case they could put in an otherwise profitless time on Otago Harbor. They would be doing the province infinitely more good earning an honest living by straightening and deepening the channels than hanging about the Molyneux in expensive idleness. Harbor mud seems a more natural environment for mosquitoes.
