SYDNEY. August 2.

Li the State Assembly, Mr Carruthers moved the second reading of the Railway Commissioners' Appointment Bill. lie said that under the circumstances disclosed by the recent Royal Commit ion the Government had no alter'lativ-i but to terminate the existence of things which, had long continned to he dangerous to the interests of the travelling public. In dissolving the present Board the Government recognised that they were breaking a contract, but they were breaking it legally and \silh the sanction of Parliament. The Bill prospered to give the C&mrnisioners compensation in the shape of one year's salary, to which would be added certain amounts arising out. of tie pension; Mr Oliver (the Chief Commissioner) receiving altogether £3,850. THE NEW BILL. SYDNEY, August 5. { Received Au,-ru6t 5, at 9.45 a.m.) The Railway Bill provides for a Chief Commissioner and two assistant Commissioners. The latter will be pratically officers having supreme command. The compensation proposed to be paid to Mr Kirkcaldio is £2.490. and to Mr Febon £1,500. Mr Carruthers (Premier) considered that the Commresioners were, being treated liberally. They had their own stupidity to blame for what had occurred. He declined to be drawn on the question of the new Commissioners. He stated that if Mr Oliver's request to be beard at the Bar of the House were granted the other two Commissioners would also ask for a similar concession.

Mr M'Gowan (Labor) failed to see that they would be able to get a better man than Mr Oliver for the money. He attributed the trouble to a faulty Act of Parliament, and not to the ttmrnissioners.

The debate lasted till early in the morning, when the second reading of tie Bill was carried on the voices.

In deference to opinions expressed in Parlirment, the opening of the new railway station has been changed to Saturday.
