The Colonial Marriages Bill has passed through committee in the Commons, Mr Winston Churchill carried an amendment declaring that the death duties paid before the passing of the Bill should not be returnable.

[This Bill was introduced by Lord Elgin (Colonial Secretary) in the House of Lords on May 8. It has passed through all the necessary stages in that Chamber. When moving the second reading, Lord Elgin ex plained that his Bill had nothing to do with the Deceased Wife's Sister Bill. It did not alter the marriage laws of Britain or in any part of His Majesty's dominions. The necessity for the Bill arose from the fact that the position of the law in different parts of the Empire had created inequality, and the object was to remove that inequality. These marriages had been legalised in all the self-governing colonies except one. The Bill would extend to those who had been lawfully joined in wedlock in the colonies rights and privileges which they themselves enjoyed in this country.]
