EDUCATION STATISTICS.

The qoarterlv returns of attendance for tho period ended June 30, 1906, which have been compiled by tho secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that there were 228 schools in operation in this district, employing 205 males and 319 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at tho beginning of the quarter was 19,264, and at the end of the quarter 19,304, comprising 9,960 boys and 9,3.44 girls. The average attendance was 8,974 boys and 8,304 girls—making a total of 17,278, being 57 less than the total for the previous quarter, and 262 less than that for the June quarter of 1905. The number of nupils admitted during the quarter was 623 boys and 628 eirlstotal, 1,251. The average for the City and suburban schools for the quarter were :—Kaikorai 653, Albany street 628, Forbury 586 Georgct, street 548, Caversham 525, High street 509. Arthur street 501, Union street 499, North-east Valley 472, Macandrev road 423, Normal 405. Mornington 400 Kensington 245, Musselburgh 165, Ravensbourne 163, Anderson Bay 118, St Claii 115, Wakari 85, Valley 48. During the quarter tho school at Whare Flat was reopened, the household school at Wairuna Estate was closed, and similar schools were opened at Nugget Point and Fortification.
