A TRYING EXPERIENCE.
GISBORNE, July 20. At Terat-a, forty miles; inland, a huge landslip completely smothered the stationhouse of Mr F. A. Tiffen at ten o'clock on Monday night. Mr Tiffen and a married cr.uplo named Merritt and a shepherd were imprisoned in the wreckagejfor several hours, until a flooded torrent swept through and washed them out amongst the gravel. Mr Tiffen and Mrs Merritt got their legs badly torn, and tho other two were severely knocked about. They crawled for hours to a wool shed, and when tfcey reached it they had all their clothes torn off. They were found at 101 a.m. on Tuesday wrap'ped in wool sacks. Thew were all suffering intensely, and were carried to Arowhana Station, a mile distant. Mr Tiffen and Mrs Merritt are reported to be in rather a bad wav.
