Replying to the request of Mr Greenslade, M.H.R., that a prohibitive duty be placed on margarine to prevent its coming into competition with butter, the Premier states that there is no provision in tho Margarine Act to prevent a merchant selling the commodity, provided it_ is branded margarine, and the Commissioner is taking steps to see that it does not come into competition as butter. At a meeting of farmers to-day Mr Greenslade advocated a prohibitive duty on _ margarine, se- as to prevent its importation, and a resolution was carried to that effect. CHRISTCHURCH. July 20. Mr Bishop, S.M., heard the case, this morning in which Mr David Sykes petitioned that lie and not Mr S. A. Staples should be declared elected for the subdistrict of Christchurch as a result of tho Tramway Board election. The trouble has arisen owing to a mistake of tho deputy returning officer at one of tho booths. The latter transposed the figures for Mr Sykes and Mr Staples, by which the former was first given a substantial majority. A day later the returning officer discovered his mistake, and gave Mr Staples the seat by a small majority. The scat is claimed by Mr Sykes on the ground that the deputy officer had no right to amend the original return, and Mr Staples, learning of his mistake, should have been the petitioner and not Mr Sykes. The magistrate decided to have a recount of all the votes, and will consider the point raised by the petitioner that.certain votes were rejected as informal which were not so, for the reason that though they were not marked in tho manner provided by tho Act, yet they clearly indicated that the voters "intended to vote for Mr Sykes.
