At a meeting of the Sydney Liedertafel it was resolved, after hearing the explanation of Mr Orchard in regard to the manner in which he was treated by the Government of New Zealand in having his appointment by the Entertainment Committee in connection with the orchestra of the International Exhibition cancelled in favor of. another appointment, that the meeting express their sympathy with Mr Orchard, and their indignation at the course adopted by the authorities. The meeting also desired to convey to the Entertainraent Committee a resolution to the effect that they fully realised the unfair position in which the Committee had been placed by having their unanimous selection ignored by the Minister. THE HON. MR M'GOWAN EXPLAINS. WELLINGTON, July 17. The Hon. 'Mr M'Gowan, Minister in charge of the New Zealand Exhibition matters, referring to the Sydney LkdertafeTs resolution relative to the selection of the musical conductor for the Exhibition, says th.lt there is no warrant, so far as the Government are concerned, for the statement that Mr Orchard was appointed. No appointment was made, .ana consequently there could bono cancellation. The Entertainment Committee had no power to make the appointment. Their duty was to make a recommendation to the Government. He had gone very carefully into the qualifications of both applicants, and felt thoroughly justified in giving the preference
