The secretary of the Bignell'e No Town Company advises that the dredge is safe from floods. The ' Mataura Ensign' states feat the trial of the oil engines on the Waimumu Queen dredge, instituted to settle a dispute between the manufacturers' agents and the pompainy about their economic efficiency, has been abandoned owing to a hitch between the parties. The Sandy Point dredge has stopned work while screen liners are being pnt in. - Both the Electric Company's dredges resumed work yesterday. * There is just a possibility of a return from the No. 2 dredge at the end of the week, as she is working in a part of the river where she will not have to contend with drift set going by other dredges. River height, Bft 7in; hard frost. Hope springs; eternal. News of hard frost and abdications of a falling river have brought about a better feeling on the share market. No business was transacted at this morning's call, but some of the apathy has been dispelled, and many stocks were accorded attention. One cheering feature of the market was the number of buyers about. Certainly they quoted very far under the prices sellers were asking, but after the spell they have been taking they can hardly be - expected to jump into their stride right away. No,* they start from the bottom again, and it is to be hoped that they will gradually work up. Otherwise, if values are to be based on their present ideas, mining senp is not enviable holding just now. A glance at the buying quotes for Alexandra Lead, Clyde', Dunstan Lead First Chance, Golden Run, Golden Bed, and New Perseverance stocks will illustrate this*. In the investment department buyers were not too obtrusive, but they offered up to £6 15s for Westport Coal shares. At yesterday afternoon's call lines were written in Pactolus at 36/6. and in Stock Exchange Proprietary at 42/.
