THE POPULATION OF THE COLONY.
[Special to the Star.] \mEtVGTON, July 17. A leaflet just published gives the population of the colony as 888,437, an increase of 115,900. or 15 per cent, over tho hut quinquennial period (1901). The totals are :—North Island, 476,9911 South Island, 411,258; Stewart Island, 272. Increaees.—lß9l census: North Island, 30,973, ,12.36 per cent.: South Island, 17,119, 5.22 per cent. 1896 census: North Islaaxl, 59,176, 21.03 per cent. ; South Island, 17,525, 5.08 per cent. 1901 census: North Island, 49,940. 14.66 per cent.; South Island, 19,425, 5.36 per cent. 1906 census: North Island, 86,320; .22.10 per cent.; South Island, 29,597, 7.75 per cent.
