CORPORATION PICNIC.

The first picnic of the Greater Dunedin Corporation employees took place on Saturday under the happiest of ' conditions. Waihola., the objective of the 1,100 men. women, and children who steamed out of Ihmedin at 9.50, proved an admirable picnic ground. Some two acres of enclosed ground had been given for the occasion bv Mr A- Paterson (the proprietor of the Lake Hotel), and here the parties broke up into smaller luncheon camps. It was manifest throughout the day that all were enjoying themselves. The only City Father present was Cr Lawrence, who one way and another did yeoman's service in judging and starting. The Mayor was unable to be present through indisposition. As far as the p ports were concerned, thev were perhaps just a bit too long, but the "programme was entered into with zest, and the many competitors in all events -showed keenness. The Committee had a solid day's work to do and got through it with a great deal of success, taking into consideration picnic conditions, which are hardly conducive to organisation. All worked hard. Among « the visitors were Messrs G. M. Barr Allan My engineer), M'Curdy, and Casey and M Donald (of the New Zealand football team). Perhaps the hardest task of the day was that allotted to Mr D. Duncan, handicapper. He did good, judicious work' and effected many close finishes. The nic was so successful that it must become an annual affair. Those who enjoyed themselves on Saturday— and few out of the 1,100 could have failed to do so—will look forward with pleasure to the next Greater i'unedin Corporation picnic. Cr Lawrence, after the sports, addressed a few words to the picnkkere. He trusted that future excursions would be as enjoyable as this the first one had proved From his knowledge of the Corporation employees he had no hesitation in sayin"' that they were a fine body of men. The°Committee had done excellent work throughout and special praise was due to Mr D.°Duncan.—(Hear, hear.) He hoped to be with them on the occasion of their next picmc Mr M'Kenzie called for three cheers "for » Cr Lawrence—the future mavor—and thev were heartily given.
