[Special to the Star.] OHRISTCHTJRCH, March 16. Mr John Roberts, of Dunedin, has been elected a director of the Christchurch Meal Company. The ‘Lyttelton Times,’ alluding to the Premier’s remarks at Levin on the appointment of teachers, says; “The system under which the committees make final appointments has very little to recommend it, because the committees cam never be as well informed as are the boards concerning the capabilities and qualifications of the teachers. Poshly Parliament may be asked next session to further amend the Education Act so as to compel the boards to send several names to the committees when vacancies occur, but if Parliament does make an alteration it will only be with the intention of weakening the boards. The method of appointing teachers indicated in the Amending Act of last year inicht be defended if we were given over in New Zealand to sectarianism. The Wesleyan Committee would then expect to be given the right to appoint Wesleyan teachers, but under existing conditions it seems to us to be a deplorable blunder to take the final selection out of the hands of the only body that cam possibly keep itself informed Ct tne movements and qualifications of all the teachers of the district.” Referring to the Exhibition, the 1 New Zealand Times ’ complains that Wellington and Dunedin, for some reason, are not , showing that enthusiasm which is being displayed by other centres. It adds that unless they “wake up” they will fiud themselves suffering by the inevitable comparisons that will be drawn from the appearance of the various courts.
