LICENSING POLLS.

TAIERI. Considerable interest was displayed in yesterday's contest, consequent on the carrying of Reduction at the Local Option poll in December last. ' Two distinct "tickets" were nominated, and. there was a keen contest. Success rested with the Tempesrance representatives. A manifesto recently issued shows that "the Committeeare of opinion that, subject to th© proviSHsas of the Act, and other things being equal, the redactions should be mads "so as to rek-eve small oomrnnnities of licenses where thenc is no real call for them. T-bey are disinclined to cancel one of several licensee in any nlace where the result woidd bo simply to increase the drinking at other licensed houses at that- place. Th© Committee do not consider it desirable to grant conditional licenses, ami it may consequently i)e taken for granted that the Dunedin Jockey Ckib and Ibe Tsaeri Amateur Turf Club will, for the next three years, be compelled to dispense with the privilege of licensed booths at their race meetings. The Committee 3.t0 also pledged to ten o'clock closing. The Moderates' representatives have held office in the Tsaeri ekctorato for the pad:- twelve vears, while yesterday's election was the first to he contested for nine years. . The successful candidates owe their return to tie decisive polls at. Moagiel in their favor. Middlemsrch pronounced nnmistakeably for the Moderate ticket. This means that- the.lie. will he no bar at the Exhibition. *'Our Owrt" wires:—Although yesterd.iy'.s lieomring election was rtonriiaally a Prohibition victory, there is little, doubt th-it- the Moderate vote contribute to it. The Prohibitionists tliemselves aeknow'cdgc the fact. The Rev. Mr Gray. «peaking to Ji importer, .adrnittal that the victory was at least partially due to the- votes of' those who,.-while not prepaid to vote Xo-licenso. were of opinion; liat tbo " trade " should he wisely ret>trieted. Tt is evident, he conriroued. that the, people do not. wish the "Vn.dc'" controlled, so far as the Licensing Committee ;ire concerned, by nominees of the- "t-mde" itself. Asked what would bo the attitude, of the Committee towards an application for a for the Exhibition. Mr Gray replied that no such applicateon had been officially suggested, and the issue was not raised at the election. "If it should lie raised." lie added, "it will no doubt be kept steadily in view." "It will he considered on its merits." suggested another of the (successful candidates, a and its merits are ]iretty bad." As showing how little interest w-ustaken in the election of the Licensing Committee for the Chalmers district, it may bo stated thai out of 6,693 "names on the roll only 2,285 persons recorded their votes. Complete returns for the Thames election are not -yet in. The. Moderate ticket w leading, and the. additional returns are likely to increase their majority. Two distinct tickets—Moderate and Temperance—were nominated. An endeavor to -effect a compromise failed, the No-license party preferring to hav-e a contest. The polling was much heavier than at previous elections. Three ra.ndida.tes on the Prohibition and two on the Moderate ticket were returned at Gisbome. The licensing election for Manawatu resulted in the return of four No-license candidates and one Independent. For Rangitikei thiee Moderates and two No-license nominees were retnrned. A Foikling message states that no great enthusiaism was shown in' the licensing election. Ten candidates, equally representing the Prohibitionists and Moderates, were nomiitaled.
