SKYLIGHTS

ANOTHER :NEW KOTIOri. | A considerable portion of local inventive idea now seems to be running in the direction of skylights, and a representative of this paper had an opportunity recently of looking over the late:* local notion in this line. The skylight—the protected rights over which arc "held by Messrs Farra Bros., of Stafford street—aims at being at once a light adinitter and a ventilator of simple and economical construction, and as, for the sake of convenient reference, everything must have a name, this ono is named—quite appropriately—"the Simplex." As a rulo the inventor who comes forward with a new mechanical or industrial idea is held to score a great pohit in its favor when he can truthfully say " any fool can work it," and if tho one objectionable word 'in the expression be eliminated we reach the chief point about tlio skylight under notice—anybody could fit it to a roof. And this is a great deal, for to fit a skylight on to a roof in a way that will be watertight skilled labor is a sine qua non, and skilled labor, of course, means expense, thoogh this fact is not always borne in mind by the purchaser at the time of purchase. Such expense, however, is obviated in the case of the " Simplex" skylight, for the very good rea-son that the skylight is already fitted to a sheet of galvanised corrugated iron when it is purchased, and to place it in position on, say, an old building, nothing is necessary beyond removing a sheet of the original roofing and substituting that into which tho skylight has already been fitted. As manufactured by Messrs Farra Bros., it can be lxnigbt fitted to any shoo of rooting iron from 6ft sheets to the 10ft article. AH its other features also look in the direction of simpßcity. It is perfectly watertight, can be easily raised or lowered by means of a simple rod, cord, and pulley attachment, and in the frame there is room for the expansions and contractions of tho glasscaused by changes of temperature. The only other matter is the cost, and, judging by the printed list of prices f.o.b. for the various sizes of skylight, one would be inclined to say that, even in the case of the very economical buyer, they would prove as simple a matter as the skylight itself. Tt is a splendid stylight for bathrooms, topstorey bedrooms, stores, barns, stables, or sheds.
