Tbe Rantey Trades and Labor Congress unanimousb/ condemned the employment of Chinese labor in the Transvaal. The Conference recommended free meals and free medical examination for all school children, and urged an eight-hours day and a pension out of Imperial taxation of 5s weekly to everybody over sixty years <»f age. The' Congress meet at Liverpool next year. COMING POLITICIANS. STATE INSURANCE AND COMPENSATION. LONDON, September 10. (Received September 11, at 8.40 a.m.) The ' Daily Mail' states that the Hanky Congress passed a resolution in. favor of Freetiadc, because the secretaries of the various unions desiring to become members of the House of Commons are tied to the Liberal pirty machine. Tbe Congress largely approved a system of State insurance and forcing employers to provide funds to compensate workmen for accidents and injuries under the Compensation Act.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr Braithwa.ite), who sent a telegram to the Premier on Friday with the object of endeavoring to find work for the unemployed, has received the following reply:—" Have referred your telegram to the Secretary of Labor for the purpose of inquiry, with a view of finding employment. Will also consult Minister of Works and Minister of Railways respecting Ihis matter. Special inquiry will be made respecting the innuendo in your telegram that Australians are given preference to New Zealanders.—R. J. Sbdbok."
