THE A-J-G MEETING. SeCOSD D.IY.—"MOJTOAY. MACHINE GUN WINS A EACE. Press Assoeiatioti —By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNET, September 11. (Recezred September 11, at 2.48 p.m.) The meeting; was continued to-day. Shorts Handicap. .£*£.—Messrs Sokmwa and NettlefoDd's Macrano Gun 1, Brockleigh 2, Airiooh 3. Spring Maiden Stakes, lip l -—Mr Stead's Isoit 1, Grams 2, Cockney Boy 5. [By Tttb AriiHTßtii.J The spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club, which began at Bandwick on Saturday, is of more than usual interest to New Zealanders, owing to the large number of horses bred in this colony that are competing. They are Maniapoto, Machine Gun, "Nightfall, Noctuiiorm, Scngod, Isolt, Gladsome, Grand Rapids, Canteen, and the steeplechasers Haydn, Up-to-date, and Dingo. The Derby was looked on as a good thing for Charles Stuart, who as a two-year-old proved himself to be a racehorse of the greatest merit, and on the last occasion at his carrying silk he put door, such brilliant gallopers as Gladsome, Famous, Sir Leonard, and Ibex in the All-aged Stakes, lr»j which he won at Randwick last Easter by four lengths, in the record time of lmiu oSsee, Koctuiiorm was, however, looked on by some " knowing ones " in this colony bs a great colt, as he was freely supported an Friday last for a good stake in the New Kealand Cup, his closing price being tens. No one waa prepared to near of Mr G. G. Stead's representatives, Noctuiform and Sungod, being the first pair to pass the judge's box. Their forward running compensates for the failure later in the day of Maniapoto, Machine Gun, Gladsome, and Nightfall to worthily vpiiold the honor of their native land. The time (2rnin o2£sec) is a record, and leads one to suppose that, the Squire of Yaldhurst can win our Derby with either of his two strings. Both colts are engaged in the New Zealand Cup. Noctuiform was handicapped at 7.5, and will now have to carry lib penalty, while Sungod's weight is 7.0. The presence of this pair in our two-thoasand-pounder will probably paralyse the betting on that race. The field of fifteen horses which took port in the Epsom Handicap is the smallest that has started for this event since Stockwell beat ten opponents over the mile course in 1888. Maniapoto's New Zealand record, together with ids track form at Randwick, caused him to be sent out a strong favorite.. But, somehow, horses from this colony cannot manage to scrape home in the chief handicaps on the other side, though on paper their prospects frequently appear to be of the best. Emir, who defeated Gladsome and Nightfall at w.La., was not an acceptor for the Metropolitan Handicap, to be run to-day. Mr Clarke's champion, However, remains in both the Melbourne and Canlfield Cops. The fastest time in Australasia for ljm previous to Saturday was registered by Gladsome (8.5) when she won the Wellington Cup in January of last year in 2min 33§9ec Noctuiform has now clipped ljsec off that record. The Derby winner only sported silk twice in New Zealand. He won the Royal Stakes, 6f, at Auckland, and finished third in the Middle Park Plate at Biccarton behind Stronghold and Marguerite. Sungod's credentials were: Won the Juvenile Stakes (6.11) at the C.J.C. spring meeting; won the Foal Stakes at A.R.C. summer meeting;' second in the Welcome Stakes at C.J.C. spring meeting to his stable mate, Mnnjeet; third in the Royal Stakes at Auckland summer meeting; and third in the Challenge Stakes at the CJ.G. autumn meeting

To-day's procramme -was enooesefully ilw ml in eo far as this colony is concerned, Marfirn* Gaa (now owned by a Canterbury syndicate, aod which formerly ran io the ooWa of Mr Stead) having got home. Hewitt would have the meant. Tie Taldbazat stable will be represented in tie Spring Matdffl States by Isolt. Swtgod claims an engagement in the New Stakes, aaad Maniapoto in the Metrop. The steeplechasers Dingo, Haydn, and Up-to-Sate also claim an engagement tlus afternoon.
