THE NEW DOCK.

A CHMSICHURGH TENDER RECOMMENDED. OOHTRACT PKICE, £58,719. [Pkui Oto Ow* Rttoxrau] A special meeting of the Otago Dock Trot, held thia afternoon, was attended by Meson E, G. Allen (chairman), Podds, Do Mans, Cable, R. Maris Clark, J. Thonunn, Sutton, and R. Hay (engineer). Mr James Mills, representing the Union Company, was also present. The object of the meeting was to receive a report from a special committee appointed bo consider the tenders for the construction of the new dock. Nine tenders were received, ranging from £53,000 to £86,256. The lowest—namelv, £s3,ooo—was from a Sydney firm, and was informal on account of having neither the deposit schedule nor the names of the sureties , The meeting resolved to go into committee to consider the report, which was as follows:

' "Your Committee resolved that tho Trust be recommended to accept the tender of Messrs Luttrell and Scott, of Christchurch, for £58,719, the contract to be completed in sixteen months from the date of the delivery of the dredge to the contractors at Port Chalmers. " It was also resolved that failing the completion of the work within tho stipulated time the difference between the lowest formal tender and Ihat of Luttrell and Scott be divided into fourteen equal instalments, and the amount deducted from any moneys otherwise due to the contractors for each and every month by which they exceeded the stipulated time of sixteen months in completing the work; this deduction to be an addition to the penalties provided m ouiiLract,

In addition to tho aliove report, the Coznmittee point out that the Trust will have to provide a cement engine and pumps. Thai will amount to £16,300. and that the amount will have to Imj added to tender, thus making the cost of the dock £75,000, and within £I,OOO of tiro engineer's estillie time originally allowed for completing the dock was twi» and a-half years. Tbo saving in expense during tho fourteen months will be considerable, and make the coet of the work much below the estimate. The meeting was not over at 4 p.m. I understand that Messrs Luttrell and Scott are the firm who built the large drill hall at Christchurch. in an unusually short time.
