ST. KILDA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual meeting of the above, held last night, was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow) and Crs Culling, Gore, M'Farlane, Mitchell, Brooks, Scanlan, Vickery, and Burk. —Correspondence.—

Tho factor of the Presbyterian Church Board of Property wrote re the Council’s complaint as to the nuisance caused by the condition of the church reserve in Queen’s Drive, and asked where soil could bo obtained in order to fill in the section.—A reply to be sent stating that plenty of soil could be obtained at Is 6d per load. An application from Mr Wm. Stewart for a footpath outside his property in High street was referred to the Works Committee to report. A request from Margaret Kennedy for a few loads of quarry dust to blind sand alongside her house was agreed to. —Reports.— The inspector’s report gave details of work done in various parts of the borough, and was adopted. The Finance Committee’s report showed the district fund to be in debit £694 Os lid, which, Cr Culling stated, was much better than usual, ana very satisfactory. —Adopted. —Tramway Matters.— The Mayor said, in reference to tramway affairs, that he had an assurance from Mr Goodman that the damage done to the footpath in the Anderson Bay road would be repaired. He also understood that the construction of tho line from Anderson Bay road to the Ocean Beach would be started within a fortnight, and the trams should be running that way in about six weeks’ time. He could not say whether the present railway lines would be lifted or not—that was a matter for the City Council to decide. The St. Kilda Order-in-Council should bo returned by the 19th inst., and he suggested that a special summoned meeting of the Council should be held on tho 21st inst. to pass the necessary formal resolutions, so that there should be no delay on the Council’s part. Cr Scanlan said that an idea seemed to prevail that St. Kilda Council were partly responsible for the delay in the running of the Anderson Bay cars. He knew that that was not so, but mentioned the matter for the purpose of getting at the truth. The Mayor said that so ter as St. Kilda was concerned ever}- expedition had been used, and the City Council recognised that St. Kilda’s action had not caused a minute’s delay. It was agreed that a special meeting be held on the 21st inst. to expedite matters in connection with the tramway.

—Street Nomenclature.— Cr Scanlan introduced a matter of some importance. He said that great inconvenience was caused by the confusion of names of streets in the borough, and suggested that a general renaming was necessary. For instance, there was Victoria road, Victoria street, and Victoria crescent in the district; there was a Cargill street in St. Kilda and a Cargill road in South Dunedin; and the consequence was that tram conductors unacquainted with the district deposited passengers at wrong points. He thought some action was necessary. The Mayor said that the Finance Committee had already considered the subject, and would shortly bring before the Council a report which would allow full discussion on the matter.
