CITY POLICE COURT.

(Before H. Y. Widdowson, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness.—A first offender, who did not appear, was fined ss, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment.

Youthful Offender.—Georg© Henry Wilson and Stanley Vincent M‘Pherson were charged with stealing a cash 'box, valued at 12s 6d, and containing £1 2s 8d in money, the property of Mar.on Henrietta Coombs.—The Sub-inspector stated that the accused were caught in the act of stealing a cash box from an office in Crawford street yesterday afternoon. Miss Coombs, the occupier of the premises, was a typist. She had occasion to leave her office for a few minutes, and while going downstairs she noticed the boys going up. On her return she saw the lads with the cash box, which they were endeavoring to open with a key. Miss Coombs at once locked the door on the accused, and sent for the police. They had both been previously convicted of theft, and were uncontrollable. Under those circumstances, he would suggest that they be sent to the Industrial School—The lads told the Court that it was another boy who took the cash j*>x. The mother of M'Pherson said that she had no trouble with her son. He was working at a milk factory, getting 12s a week.—The parents of the other boy. did not appear.—His Worship ordered that Wilson be sent to the Caversham Industrial School, to be brought up in the Methodist form of religion, and that M'Pherson be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Maintenance.—Thomas Grainger was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, of which Sarah May Roskilley ’ was the mother. Mr Calvert appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty.—The Subinspector stated that the child was an inmate of the Industrial School, and the proceedings Vken on behalf of the department. —Mr Calvert objected to tbo police proceedings. It was a private prosecution, and they had no right to appear.—His Worship: I think it is a point you can very well waive.—Air Calvert: Very well, your Worship.—After evidence the defendant was ordered to pay Ss a week.
