THE TRADES CONFERENCE

CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. The Trades Councils' Conference resolved, on the motion of Westland, that the words "present at the meeting" be inserted after the word " members " in section 1 of clause 98 of the Arbitration Act, 1900, and that section 99 be repealed; and, on. the motion ot Otago, that a clause be inserted investing the chairmen of conciliation boards and stipendiary magistrates with power to award costs in disputes regarding matters of detail arising out of awards of the Arbitration Court.

The following motions were passed by the Trades Councils' Conference : —" That the Government be urged to introduce legislation providing that the president of the Arbitration Court should attend solely to arbitration business" (moved by Air T. W. Wellington). "That awards be given within thirty days of the hearing of cases" (Mr J. Barr, Canterbury).—"That clause 25 of the Arbitration Act be amended by the addition of ' and that a. copy of eveiy industrial agreement filed shall be available for inspection for a period of six weeks from the date of filing in the office of the clerk of awards in the industrial district, provided, also, that the clerk of such industrial district shall within fourteen days from the date of filing give notice of such filing in one or more newspapers circulating in the said district" {Mr Stringer, Canterbury).
