ROWING.

[By Fin.] The veteran scalier M. J. Slack -won the championship on the Brisbane River three weeks ago, beating his sole opponent, C. P. •Paul, by ten lengths in 18min 3sec. When it was announced some weeks ago that the ex-champion was again in the field he was not taken seriously, but this last performance encourages the hope that he has struck something II his old form and pace, and if that is so the race for the amateur championship at Brisbane in Mav will be''worth travelling far to see. Tasmania, Victoria i*ad New siiwKdsj

represented, and pace and stamina in the highest degree will he needed to win. It is a pity that the great distance precludes New Zealand being represented by such a sculler as J. M’Grath.

Tom Sullivan has lately entered into possession of the Spencer Arms Hotel, Lower Putney Common, Barnes. In the N.S.W. Rowing Association’s Champion Eights, rowed last month, the Sydney and Glebe sheds alone were represented. The start was a good one, Glebe being the first to move, but Sydney, after rowing four or five strokes, took the lead, and at the end of a half-minute were about a length in front. Sydney led all the way, and passed the judge at 14min 25sec, with a lead, of 19sec. The Sydney, well stroked by Fite.hardinge,- rowed really well, the time and blade work being capital. The catch was hard and crisp, and the recovery steady. The Glebe stroke got sluggish at times and his No. 6 was repeatedly in the water before him. The Glebe were not too well together, and did not show the form i" ia week previously. For the Champion Sculls, rowed on the Parramatta the same day as the Eights, M. G. Cater (Sydney) was oposed by two Mercantile scullers —N. J. M’Douald and A R. Ivens. Ivens was slow getting array, and gave up halfway down the course. McDonald and Cater sculled, split wide apart, on even terms for a mile. Cater then drew-, away, winning in 16min 57sec by half a minute, despite the fact that two individuals in a boat all but ran him down at the finish. A small steamer considerably interfered with M’Donnld at Abbotsford. *
