THE TRADES CONFERENCE

CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The New Zealand Trades Councils' Con. ference resumed their fittings this morning. The annual report, previously telegraphed, was adopted, and the revised order paper, containing thirty-one items, approved. —Chinese Labor on the Rand.— Mr A. Eosxer (Auckland) moved—" That the Conference support the Premier in his protests against the introduction of Chinese labor into the Transvaal." Mr W. T. Young (Wellington) moved as an amendment "That the Conference appreciate and endorse the Premier's protests, as we are of opinion that the Rand mines can be profitably r.orked by white labor, and that tho importation of Chinese is a most deliberate attempt on the part of the Rand rnhio owners to deprive the British white labor of its undoubted rights." Several speakers condemned most vigorously the proposal to import Chinese, and after a prolonged discussion Mr Rosser withdrew his motion in favor of the amendment, which was carried unanimously.
