LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.

A public meeting was held at Alexandra ™ Thursday night to consider what steps suould be taken to impress on the Government the necessity of cutting np portion ot Ualloway rur, for dose settlement The mayor (Mr James Kclman) occupied the chair. He pointed out the advantages that would be gained if portion of the ran wan rat pp for settlement In the course of disimssion it was pointed out that there arcabout 5.000 acres on Galloway Flat, and also part of Moutere run. which could be acquired for close settlement, and is specially suitable for fruitgrowing, grain, and vegetables. There is also plenty of water in the vicinity, which could be brought on at very little cost. The meeting resolved to draw up a petition to be forwarded to the Lands Department through Mr James Bonnet, M.H.R., the member for the district, urging the Government to get the land thrown open ;is soon as possible as there arc plenty of people who would take up the land.
