QUEEN ALEXANDRA.
FIRE AT SANDRLNGHAM. A NARROW ESCAPE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, December 11. The beam of the room below the Queen's sleeping apartment at Sandringham caught fire. Details show that at five o'clock on Thursday morning the Hon. Miss Charlotte Knollys, one of the Women of the Bedchamber, on awaking found the room filled with smoke. She rushed to the Queen's room overhead, and both escaped in then dressing gowns, Miss Knollys arousing other? of the Queen's household. Almost before the Queen reached the staircase the floor of her bedroom collapsed at the spot where she had been sleeping, together with the ceiling below. Although there was general consternation, the Queen's admirable composure in watch ing the operations of the Royal Household Fire Brigade reassured everybody. The outbreak was due to the electric wires, which had just been installed. The damage is only about £I,OOO, bul the Queen's little personal treasures and mementoes of friends, such as photographs, were ruined by fire and water. A special messenger carried a reassurina message to the King, who was staying ai •Lord Iveagh's, at Cleveden.
