At rhe Magistrate's Court, Lawrence, Donald Mansen was convicted of obtaining an old age pension certificate by misrepresentation. of his financial position. He was ordered to pay double the amount that had been paid to him—viz., £9B. The election of a councillor to represent St. Leonards Ward in the West Harbor Borough Coimcil resnlted hi the return of M r Martin Pryde, who polled twenty votes. The other candidate (Mr Joshua Hill) received seventeen votes. In 1861 there were in London 37,000 tailors, in 1871 38.000. in 1881 40,300, in 1891 52,300. and in 1901 80,074. These figures are from the 1 Tailors’ Handbook.’ The above astonishing increase is undoubtedly due to the large influx of aliens of :11 nationalities in recent vears.
