OPENING OF THE BOWLING SEASON.

DUNEDIN GLOB. of the above club spared no pains to make their opening day one of the events of the season, and their efforts (coupled with tho substantial aid of President R. T. Wheeler, jun.) were crowned with success. For some weeks past the painters had been at work, and on Saturday the pavilions and surrounding woodwork presented a spick-and-span appearance. As regards the green there was only one opinion—it was everything that could be dtsired. The nmch-coveted pennant won last season was displayed from tho northern end of the balcony, and was an object of interest to visitors. The glorious -weather brought out the ladies in full force, and the wives of toe Committee (headed by Mrs Wbcclec, Mrs Gillies, and Mrs E. Peakej ws& untiring in their task of handing round tea .and dainty eatables. Noticeable amongst the visitors were Messrs C. T. Paterson, J. "W. Smith, and W. Coltman (Kaituna), J. Gray, W. DalL, and J. M'Kay (St. Clair), George Hescott (Wangairai), and E. Manchester (secretary Ashburton 8.C.). Mr C S. Reeves, one of the original members of tiie Dunedin Bowling Cluh, took part m the .•jr&uiji, and evidently still finds enjoyment io -a up," Among other veterans present -were Messrs A. "Mowat, A, MDiarmid r R. Campbell, and Anderson, At half-past two Mr Wheeler addressed the assemblage, and in concluding called upon Mrs Wheeler to open tho green by rolling tie first jack. The usual match President v. Vice-president was then commenced, and at four o'clock terminated to allow of a brief interval for speech-making. Mr Wheeler said that it afforded him great; pleasure to-see so numerous a turn-out on their opening day, and trusted that it would prove the forerunner of many similar occasions during the season. To visiting boarfers he extended a hearty welcome, He had the feeling that all were enjoying them> selves, and from what he had seen and the remarks he had overheard the green was playing satisfactorily. To the ladies, whom he was gratified to see in such numbers, he wished to tender the thanks and pleasure of bis club, and to those ladies who had so ungrudgingly given their services in the refreshment department special thanks were due. He would not speak at length, because there were other who possibly had something to say, and also that the bowlers were anxious to " get going" again. He then called on

Mr C. T. Paterson (Kaituna), who in tlie. course of.a brief and humorous speech said that it afforded him pleasure to be there as a guest, and, surrounded as they were l-y such a galaxy of beauty, it was small wonder th3t everything looked so bright and cheerful. On behalf of Kaituna be -wished the D.B.C. a prosperous year. Mr W. Dall (St. Clair) expressed gratification at being present. Ha had, unfortanaixly, been unable to reach the green in time to participate in the game, but could the members that the reciprocal feeling which pervaded the city green was much appreciated by his fellow-clubmen. Mr George Hescott (Wanganui) also testified to the pleasure it gave him to be amongst them. Play was then continued, and a little 1 liter Messrs Wheeler and J. C. Short paid a visit to the Caledonians.

A. Kirby, another vice-presi-dent. It -was originally intended to make the game twenty-one heads, but owing to some of the bowlers -wanting to get away it was terminated at the fourteenth head.
