[Pur United Press Association.] HAWERA, July 18. The Chamber of Commerce have decided to promote an industrial exhibition, to be held in Hawera in February. A meeting under the auspices of the Chamber discussed the Shops and Offices Bill at length; and eventually decided to hold a public meeting, in which the farming community will be asked to take part, it being urged that the convenience of country settlers should be consulted in the matter of holidays. , > AUCKLAND, July 18. Four arrests have been made on charges of stealing or acquiring goods, the property of John Barns and Co., wholesale hardwaremeu, the alleged thefts extending over a period of two years. The accused include a storeman, a carter, a painter, and the son of an Auckland grain merchant. Frank Mason was arrested yesterday on three charges of false pretences, involving a sum of £65, at Christchurch.

NE-W PLYMOUTH. July 18. At a meeting yesterday the Harbor Board decided by 5 to 3 to introduce a Bill into Parliament authorising a loan for the extension of the harbor. They also set up a committee to readjust the boundaries of the electoral wards. The loan proposal is to borrow about £150,000, spread over six years, so as to give accommodation for ocean vessels.

PALMERSTON NORTH, July 18. At the annual meeting of the Hereford Cattle-breeders’ Association yesterday the report congratulated members on a most prosperous year both as regards increased membership and financially. The report also states that Hereford cattle are increasing in popularity in all parts of the colony, and there is a growing demand for bulls. Mr George Wheeler was elected president, Mr Levett vice-president, and Mr Chambers and Mr A. H. Russell members of the Council.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. The president of the New Zealand Trotting Association has telegraphed to Mr Howell, chairman of the Special Committee set up to inquire into the status of the Auckland Club, suggesting that the inquiry be postponed and the matter remitted back to the Association for further confederation at the August meeting, meantime the president to 'take legal advice of the Association’s solicitor.
