GREATER DUNEDIN.

A PUBLIC MEETING TO BE CALLED. A deputation consisting of the. Mowing gentlemen waited- on His Worship the Mayor this morning to ask him to call a public meeting on the Greater Dunedin question Messrs D. M. Findlay, Q. BelL Jas. Arkle, W. Gow, W. Burnett, W. Wardrop, R. Ewing, J. M. Gallaway, P. Oakden, and P. C. Cray. Mr Findlay said that it was the opinion of the deputation that it would be a good plan to call a public meeting to consider the question of the amalgamation of the uity and suburbs, and that gentlemen, to be appointed at such a meeting, should act as a commission, in conjunction with representatives of the, boroughs, to go into toe whole matter, obtain data from the different boroughs, and to ascertain the exact position as to the possible requirement of legislation, etc., as well as to obtain- actuarial advice on matters of finance. He suggested, also, that the commissian should be of a neutral character. ' Mr Oakden emphasised the desirability of s ” c “ neutrality, and suggested fW. it should consist of representative citizens, in whose report the boroughs would have confidence. • Mr Bell said that he thoroughly agreed with Hie proposal to appoint-a commission, and he sincerely frosted that the movement would result in relieving the councils of a great deal of the difficulty now surrounding the question, and make for settlement to the satisfaction of bD. Mr Findlay said that it was expected tto* the bjjnragha would be represented on the commission. . The Mayor said he had given the subject some consideration, and thought this step would be one in the right direction. The commission would be in a position to ascertain the exact position of each borough. If only ordinary municipal matters were involved there would be no need for amalgamation, but the larger questions of light- * mg, water supply, tramways, etc., made it desirable. He then agreed to call a public meeting, and Messrs Findlay, Oakden, and Gallaway were authorised to confer with him to make the necessary arrangements.
