A JEALOUS MAORI.
ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER AND SUICIDE. MARTON, *Tay 23. On Friday afternoon, at Rata, a Maori named Kercopa Ihaka made a determin d effort to kill his wife with a carving knifeHe inflicted a deep wound in her neck, then endeavored to knock his brains out by running full tilt at a brick chimney. Not succeeding, he attempted to cut his throat with a knife. This was taken away, and he then made a da.'h for a tomahawk, and struck a severe blow on his head, inflicting a big hole in his skull, hut thi? was not fatal. SurgiciU advice was obtained from Hunterville, and the dot tor says if the wound had been a quarter of an inch deeper it would have ken fatal. Both the man and woman wire removed to the Wapganui Hoipital th's morning. Kereo"a's wife, though weak from, the loss of blood, is not dangerouly wounded. On recovery the man will be charged with attempt d murder. The cause of the onslaught appears to have been jealousy.
