MINING NEWS.

The Upper Waipori dredge has been undergoing an overhaul all this week. V mu I |- e^P ected t0 resumed on Monday. .the Keuy and Casey dredge has not been working this week. The Great Central euim has proved 100 deep for the dredge to bottom, and she has been closed down pending a meeting of shareholders. The New Greenstone resumed dredging last Saturday. b The New Garibaldi expect to take a fortnight to open out a paddock. There will be no wash up this week. The ‘Alexandra Herald’ states that a local party is taking steps to place., a wire across the river near Butchers Point, for the purpose of transmitting coal across the river Irom the top of Butchers Hill to the opposite side of the river. From this point the coal can be delivered by dray as far down the river as the First Chance dredge. The new departure will obviate the necessity for sleighing the coal down the hill, and the boating will also be unnecessary above a certain point.

Dredge-masters’ reports for week ended 11th init. Aldinga —Except for a stoppage of hours on Thursday to put on six repaired buckets, and another next day to put on a set of friction blocks, they had a steady run. The ground became more solid than for some weeks past. They were working the full width of the claim, which was just there 5i chains, with a varying depth of from 34ft to 10ft. Erickson’s Reward.—The wash showed no alteration. The best ground was still on the north side of the paddock. On the south side the ground was very shallow, with a soft clay bottom carrying only a little wash, which was intermixed with mullock. There had been a good deal of timber to contend with, and a stoppage of eight hours had been caused through the ladder line breaking. Victory.—The ground was much the same, but in some places showed signs of becoming a little deeper. There was no wash up, owing to the short run. All repairs possible had been done during the steppage, and before starting again the dredge-master stated his intention of washing uu.

ilaori King.—The dredge resumed work on Wednesday, Bth inst,, after repairs to the ladder hangers. They were working in shallow ground close to the creek ride, but hoped to get a sideling on the bottom, and should they get _ one better returns are looked for, as it is generally thought good eold is got in that locality on sideling reef, it is intended to open out on the hillside a-ter the next cut across the face.

STOCK EXCHANGE NOTES.

The river is at the sft 4in mark. There was a lull in the share market this morning after yesterday’s spurt of business. Buyers then had to go up to sellers’ ideas of values to fill their orders, and this morning s quotes show an all-round firmness of tone about the market. New Bendigos were not mentioned, but Manuheribias,'' Sailor’s Bends, Golden Rivers, and Davis Bends (pds.) were all well sought. Dunstan Leads changed hands at a good advance on late values, and Hartley and Rileys were in demand up to £3, at which price there was also inquiry for an odd parrel of Cromwells. Grand Junctions, were rather easier, but Riley’s Beaches and Prince Arthurs were once more in moderate request. Endeavors maintained yesterday’s advance, and Lady Roxburgh® were mentioned by buyers. New Roxburgh Jubilees, carrying a 2s dividend, were well asked for, but there were rone on offer Sandy Points remain in steady inr.niry. West' Coast stocks command'd comparatively little attention this morning.
