OUR FISH SUPPLY.

[BniCXAI. TO THB Btak.)

CHEISTCHURCH, September 27. There is an unprecedented shortage in the fish supply of the city at present. At the sale in the public market yesterday there was not a single fish. The fishmongers state that the sbortago has never bten so groat before, and there is some talk about putting tip the shutters for a time. At a late sale there was a very meagre supply. Prices went up to absurdly high figures. Small flounders a little over standard siae sold in the open market at 14s 6d- a dozen, or about Is 2d each; crayfish (large and small) were sold to fishmongers at 12s per dozen; butterfish up to 5s each; whitebait at 7s 9d & quarter (wholesale); flounders 15s, 16s, 17s, and 18s per dozen; cod from 10s to 13s per dozen; ling 9s each; conger- eels 7s 6d each. One" shop en Thursday was closed en account of the lack of business. It opened yesterday, but all tbe goods it dssnlayed were some cockles and rabbits. The same s l ate of affairs seems to exist all over the ro'ony. Advices from Auckland Napier, -W-llin«r----ton, Dunedin, and the Bluff state thai the demand is far in excess of the supply. At Napier 6d a pound is rharged fcr flounders, irrespective of condition or quality. A letter from a fishmonger at Oamaru states that he has had pracically nothing in Hs) shop for three weeks. ',-:
