WHITE V. BLACK LABOR.

The ‘ Argus ’ records that the first attempt in the Geraldton (Queensland) district to harvest sugar 1 cane with white labor has been made. A gang of ten men, with casual assistance and a cook, operated on 30 acres The pay was 5s a ton and the time occupied gave the rate of wages about 15s a week per man, exclusive of the coat of living. Some of the laborers had had experience of similar work in New South Wales. Each man averaged about half a ton of cane a day, compared with about 2 tons by kanakas.
