HOW TO REDUCE CORPULENCY.

Many different methods for the treatment of pronounced obesity have been advocated during the last twenty years, with various results. Tho following method, based on scientific grounds, has been tried with great success in many cases:—The individual *8 restricted to a purely nitrogenous diet, consisting of 11b of cooked fish and lib of lean meat per day, and a pint of hot water must be drunk at intervals of two hours. Apart from this, no other article of diet mnst be taken. The meat and fish may be taken at regular intervals, as suits the case. Five or six pints of water should be taken during the day. The hypothesis on which this treatment rests is that the patient supplies the needful hydrocarbons, which are withheld from his diet, through absorption from hi* own body. The ingestion of the large quantities of hot water is likewise suppose! to exert a beneficial influence. This should be continued even after the patient has re turned to ordinary diet, from which, however, potatoes and beer are especially excluded. It is not unlikely that the large quantities of water tend to overcome the renal disturbances which often manifest themselves when an exclusive nitrogenous diet is adopted with the ingestion of the ordinary amount of water only. Another system practically the same with regard to essentials, but allowing more latitude as to diet, is probably more popular with those who object to many restriction I '. AU fatty foods are, of course, excluded, also all those that are converted into fat, such as sugar and farinaceous food, breal, potatoes, beetroot, parsnips, carrots, turnips, rice, hominy, beans, and peas, substituting, in moderate quantities, spinach, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, greens, cabbaze free from stems, butter milk, skimmed mi’.k, oysters, eggs and meat, except pork and veal. AH vegetables grown underground should be avoided. The diet table is as fellows :—Breakfast, 4oz or soz of chopped beef, chicken, mutton, or game, or boiled white fish; one large cup of weak tea, without milk or sugar. Dinner, soz or 6oz of any white fish, except herring or eels, any kind of poultry or game, any meat, except pork or veal; a biscuit or •• piece of dry, crisp toast. Toast is the best accompaniment to every meal. Supper, 3oz or 4oz of chopped beef or chicken, and <■ little dry toast. A pint of hot water is to be sipped at intervals; about four pints of Lot water to be taken during the day. Moderate daily exercise should be taken, and a course of physical exercises wil, often accomplish wonders in reducing cor pulency, especially in young persons.
