NORTE ISLAND v. SOUTH ISLAND.

The following team has been selected to represent the North Island against the South Island on February 28, March 1 and 3 : D. Hay, KaHender (Auckland), H. B. Lusk, Dent, E. Trott (Hawke’s Bay). E. Upham, C. Richardson, Midlane, Tucker, A. Williams (Wellington), and B. M'Carthy (Taranaki). The selection was made by Mr F. Ohlson. Mr J. C. Baker has selected the following team to represent the South Island: A. E. Ridloy, F. S. Frankish, S. T, Callaway, A. Sima (Canterbury), A. H. Fisher, G. 6. Austin, R. Wilkie, F. Williams, A. E. Geddes, A. Downes, J. C. Baker (Otago). It has been given out that Midlane, who is quite a lad, is leaving for Sydney by the Westralia to-morrow afternoon for the purpose of obtaining a wider experience in the noble game, and if this is so the North Islanders will be minus his valuable services. Midlane has been strongly recommended to go to Australia, where he would have the benefit of more keen and skilful coaching. At the present time he is unquestionably one of the finest bats in the colony, Richardson (Wellington), Baker (Otago), Sim (Canterbury), Hay (Auckland), and Trott (Hawke’s Bay) being perhaps his only rivals. Midlane was to be accompanied to Sydney by Mr I. Hyarns, hon. treasurer of the Wellington Cricket Association, who has been deputed by the New Zealand Rugby Union (of which body he is treasurer) to act as the latter’s representative at the conference of delegates from Australasian Rugby Unions to be held in Sydney next month. \
