The following .is the resolution carried by the House:—"That a, respectful address b'e presented to His Excellency the Governor requesting His Excellency to convey to His Majesty's principal Secretary of State for the Colonies, for presentation to the Government of the United States of America, the following resolution—'That the House of Representatives of New Zealand, in Parliament assembled, expresses its sorrow at the sad and melancholy death of the President of the United States of America, Mr M'Kinley, and sincerely sympathises with the people of the United S r tates, and offers heartfelt condolence to Mrs M'Kinley and the relatives of the late President, and joins with the English people throughout the world in deploring the calamity that by his demise lias eventuated." The following resolution was also passed: —" This House desires to place on record ils regret at the death of the late Colonel William Fraser, and its appreciation of his services as a member of the House of Representatives, and tenders Mrs Eraser its sincere sympathy and condolence.'' A similar resolution was passed regarding the late Mr Scobie Mackenzie. JOTTINGS. When the- Counties Bill is before the House Mr M'Nab will seek to include clauses in it empowering a Council to establish electric light works or purchase existing works, and to supply electricity either within or without the county under its jurisdiction.
