South Denedin.—The regular meeting of the South Dunedin Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by Mayor Fiddis, Crs Lyon, Marlow, Todd, Scott, M'Key, Johnston, Dotting, and O'Kanc-—A letter was read from the Department of Agriculture stating that they would undertake the work of inspecting the dairies in the borough.—The Department of Public Health drew attention to the provisions of the new Public Health Act with reference to having sanitary inspectors.—The South Dunedin Fire Brigade wrote with regard to the medal granted by the Council to ex-Foreman Brooks, and intimated that Captain Price intended to return the cost of the medal to the Council. It was resolved that Captain Price, and ex-Foreman Brooks b* iequested to appear before the Council at their next meeting to give an explanation re medal; a copy of Captain Price's letter to be sent to ex-Foreman Brooks.

Port Chalmers.—The fortnightly meeting of the Council was attended yesterday evening by His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. A- De Maus), Crs Innes, Inverarity, Edgar, M'Kay, Simpson, M'Pherson, Tait, Shanks, Wilson, and Cable. Apologies were received from Crs Leach and Weir.—The Works Cbmmittee reported that if the Dock Trust would put up a retaining wall running from the mouth of the sewer and the railway pipe were extended to face of the wall, the Council would have a capital depot for rubbish for a few years.—The Water Committee reported that the repairs to the reservoir had been completed, and Mr Hay, CLE.-, had expressed his satisfaction at the manner in which the work had been carried out. Adopted, and a bonus of £5 granted to the inspector in recognition of the manner in which he had carried out the work.—The Special Committee reported that the mainc would shortly arrive, and stated that specifications were .being prepared for laving them. Tenders would be called for the work at once, and authority was asked to accept the most suitable before the next regular meeing of the Council—Cr Tait gave notico to move—" That the Coiuncil of the Borough of Port Chalmers make, on the 6th day of February, 1901, pursuant to the provisions of the Rating Act, 1894, a special annual recurring rate for a period of forty-one years of 2d in the £, upon the rateable value of the rateable property of the borough as appearing upon the Valuation roll for the time being in force in respect of the Borough of Port Chalmers, for the purpose of repaying the loan of £2,500, and the interest thereon, to be borrowed by the Council under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act for a period of forty-one years, at 3£ per cent, interest, to improve and extend the waterworks and water supply of the said borough, and that such rate shall bc-payable in two equal sums half-yearly, on the 14th day of April and the 14th-day of October •in each s&xc" v
