THE NEW ZEALANDERS. The following summary of the casualties in New Zealand Contingents whilst serving in Sonth Africa is instructive:—

THE TOTAL LOSSES. From the return issued by the War Office the following statement represents the casualties in the South African field force reported up to the end of November.

One thousand five hundred and seventyfive officers and 35,548 men have been sent homo as invalids. Of these 231 have died, 1,314 have been discharged from the Bervioe as unfit, and 781 are in hospital. Exclusive of sick and wounded men now in British hospital* in South Africa, the total losses are 49,728. The number of deaths from disease recorded in the month of October is eight offiscrs and 451 men. The total number of prisoners and missing has been 302 officers and 7,923 men. OF these 284 officers and 6,595 men have been released or have escaped. «. The great majority of the men invalided home have recovered and rejoined for duty, and when deductions have been made for these the total reduction of the military forces through the war in South Africa stands at 14,178, made up as follows: Deaths in South Africa, 575 officers and 11,804 men ;■ missing and prisoners, 14 officers and 1,236 men (these figures doubtless including a largs number of men reported "missiDg" who have subsequently rejoined, but whose return has not been notified); invalids sent home who have died, 4 officers and 231 men ; invalids nent home who have left the service as unfit, 1,314 men.
