The Kia Ora has undergone a thorough survey at the hands of Mr Wetherall (inspector of machinery), and she will be ready for sea on Friday. The alterations include an extension of the deck accommodation. The steamer will now be able to run for twelve months before another survey is necessarv. On the present occasion her ticket did not expire for a few months, but the company decided to avail themselves of the opportunity of her going into dock, and so secure a. renewal for twelve months, as the facilities at the Islands for the execution of repairs entail considerable delay. Captain Dcwhurst is to have charge of the vessel, which goes to Fiji via Westport. The. report that Captain Ahram. of the Hawea, passed the disahlcd vessel Grace Harwnr oil Portland Island and disregarded signals of distress was regarded by some of his friends in Wellington as improbable, and one of them telegraphed to him on the subject. In his reply Ahram says that he would not knowingly pass any distressed vessel; that he passed the sliip 'in question at a distance of five miles, and saw no signals ; that she appeared to be all right except that her mizzen-topsail was gone; -'inn tl a' the weather was fine at the time. A Sydney paper mentions the fact that five steamers are being built in Sydney for the Mokau River trade.

The j well-known Lyttelton trading schooner Rock L,iiy. which sailed from the southern port for Auckland a few days apo, has been purchased by Mr Brown, of Auckland.
