SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING.

[Special to tht. Star.]

WELLINGTON, January 21. The weather is close and muggy, and promises fine for the opening day of the Wellington summer meeting. Blazer will be reserved for the Telegraph Handicap. My anticipations are: Anniversary Handicap. Phooka os Whiritea. Maiden.—Fashion or Proposal. Wellington Cup.—Boreas (who will babracketed with Tortulla on the "tote") or Materoa. Wellesiey Stakes.— Menschikoff. President's.—Strathnairn or Ruamahunga. Hack Race.—Gipsy Jack or Dartmoor. Nursery Handicap.—Red Gauntlet or Destroyer. Telegraph Handicap.—Blazer, encounter most danger from Ostiak. THE CYCLE SPORTS. Training operations on tho Caledonian Gi-ouild are quite brisk at present, in view of the Otago Club's sports next Saturday'. Huston and Holland aro putting in good work, and among others I notice Rapson. doing ?ood. steady -work. Randall is sprinting in great, form. Sangster seems short of* work, but a steady week's training will make i him a formidable opponent for the MileHandicap. Roxburgh, a colt, shows great promise. Lethaby, an enthusiast, is training well, but should be more careful and ride.' more evenly. Gunthorpe, combining cricketwith training, is inclined to overdo it. but doubtless he knows his own strength and! abilities by this time. Amongst the amateurs, Hill is going well, and should ibeat' Amos (the Northern crack) in the shorter dis-j tance. I hear that Sutherland, Barker, A.' Ralston, and Connell are in great form, and: will be in Dunedin early this week. ' The championship race should be the best we haye had here. Efforts aro being made to induce the Race Committee to include an event for returned troopers in uniform, as it. is thought that a large number will be present at the meeting.

BOWLING. A friendly match waa played on the Porbj Chalmers green on Saturday between thei Taieri and the local club, and after a very interesting and enjoyable game the visitors, were declared the winners by 25 points. 1 The following are the playersrand scores:: \

At the Wellington Trotting Club's meet~i ing on Saturday the winners were:—Trial j Vanquish (£H Is); Railway Plate, Strathmore (£o 9s); Trotting Crab Handicap, The Member (£7 8s); District, Eddie (£T.; ! President's, Berlin Maid (£3); Dash, Valor* (15s); Electric, Sweet Marie (£1 6s). Poor acceptances have been received for the principal flat races at the Gore dab's summer meeting, -though the trots have, as usual, fi'.led well. For the Gore Cup, one mile and a-qnarter, the acceptances are : Jupiter 10.5, Abercrombie 9.0, Red Bannec 8.2, Wedlock 7.12. For the Flying: Abercrombie 9.9, Decor 9.2, Zillah 7.13. The first class match of the Port Chalmers Sailing Club was held in the Lower Harbor on Saturday, when sir boats competed. There was a light N.E. wind* with. moderate sea, and some very good work was dons. A start was made from Mr Wiseman's hoatshed, Port Chalmers, a* 2.50 p.m., the distance sailed being twice round', the buoy at Lower Portobelio and back to the shed. The boats came in in the following order:—Hornet, handicapped 3min lh aOmin 39sec, 1; Shamrock, scratch, lh 27mm 51sec, 2; Volunteer, lh 38min 20sec, 3. In the second class match the Maggie had no opponent. Anglers have obtained some good sport in the Opihi on the fly during tie last week (says the Timarn ' Post'). The fiver, however, has been rather high for minnow fishing. On Tuesday night Mr T. Brown landed a trout weighing B|lb, whilst on Thursday night Mr Wigley caught one weighing 12jjlb. Both-of these were caught witLthe artificial fly. At the Forton meeting to-day Horoeka. (£8 lis) won the Flying Hack, the Foxtoa Cup resulted thus: Daphne 1, Volley 2„ Bona Fide 3. All the acceptors started., 1 Time, 2min leasee. Daphne paid the diyi-> dend-0f.£51155.
