THE COURT-TO-DAY.
CITY POLICE COURT. (Before Messrs A. G. Christopher and David Larnaob, J.P.s.) Theft.—William Francis Wilkinson was charged with theft, on the 14th insri, of a waten, valued at £2 10s, the property os. Wm. Taylor. Mr Hewitt appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty.—Counsel said that the facts were that the man went to Mr Taylor’s to bay a watch, which was to be presented by him and some others to a friend. He got the watch on sale or return, but instead of returning it or paying for it ho and his companions (who had been drinking) took the watch away and pawned it for KB. This was the first time he had been before the Court, and up to the present he had always borne a good character.-The Bench convicted accused, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. He was also ordered to pay all costs. Ah Moke was charged with the theft, on the 18th inst., of a tin of fat, valued at 3s 9d, the property of Alfred Ayers. Accused pleaded not guilty.—The facts, as stated by the Sab-inspeotor, were that the complainant, who was a general dealer, during his rounds yesterday, bought a tin of fat, which be left on the footpath in charge of his boy. The latter went into another place to get some bottles, and when he returned the fat was gone. The matter was reported to Sergeant Gilbert, who went to M‘Leod’a soap works and there found the Chinaman with the fat, and in the act of being paid for it. On being spoken to by the complainant accused said: “All right. If it’s your fat, you take the money for it.”—This being accused’s first offence, he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, besides being ordered to pay all costs.
