CONGRATULATIONS FROM AUSTRALIA. The Postmaster - General has received letters from several representative men in Australia in acknowledgment of his New Year’s card in connection with the inauguration of the penny-postage system in New Zealand. Premier' Philp, of Queensland, writes: ‘‘At the request of His Excellency the Governor I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of the Ist insb. expressing your good wishes for the New \sar. His Excellency desires me to convey his hearty thanks for yonr good wishes, and to reciprocate the hope that the now century will accomplish the complete oemonting qf the Empire and its continued expansion in the interests of national progress and equality.” The Bishop of Goulbourn, in aoknowledging Mr Ward’s courtesy in sending a copy of tho postcard under the universal penny postage system of New Zealand, “ hopes that the Australian Commonwealth may soon see its way to adopt the system.” The Bishop of Newcastle-says Allow' me to thank you for yonr welcome card signalling New Zealand’s association with tho universal penny postage. I hops that Australia will soon adopt the same wise and desirable policy.” The Bishop of Melbourne, in acknowledging receipt of the postcard, remarks thar, it is of historic interest. Tho Governor-General (Lord Hopetonn) returns his grateful thanks for ihe card which the Postmaster-General of New Zeaand has been kind enough to send him.
