The death of Professor Ulrich through an accident which occurred to him The I.Dto Pro- while engaged in the scientific fessor Ulrich, investigations to which he was so demoted ill, we feel sure, be regarded with deep regret, not only in Otago, where his career of active usefulness has extended over a quarter of it century, but throughout New Zealand and the Australian colonies, where, we believe, with-
out exception, those who have studied under him hold responsible positions on the goldfields, and by the intelligent discharge of their duties in the Schools of Mines have as mine managers, etc., spread the fame of the Otago University far and wide. The late professor had great difficulties to contend with for a long period after his appointment in 1877, and it was 'not, indeed, until ten years later that the school was at all properly equipped and officered; The fight has been an uphill one all along, owing to the inadequacy of the funds available; and the remarkable success attained in the turning out of first-class men has been entirely owing to the high attainments, practical ability, and enthusiastic devotion to .tys work of the professor. He has been a faithful servant to the University and the public, never relaxing his efforts, even when enfeebled by ill-health, and dying literally in harness, in the very, midst of his class work of this term. The circumstances of his death are specially deplorable, both in a public and private sense. The School of Mines, which he had worked up to a high state of efficiency. loses his guiding mind at a critical period., when the fruits are being reaped of.so many years of culture, and the field o? the usefulness of the institution is being largely extended. To his brother professors and the present students his loss may well seem to bo irreparable. It will bo difficult indeed to capably fill his place, but wo may hope that the mantle may. fall upon the shoulders of one of his own training, intimately conversant with his methods of instruction. The sympathies of the City and of the whole of 6tago will, we feel confident, bo with the suddenly bereaved family of Professor Ulrich in their deep affliction.
