MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
C A tho weekly meeting of the Alliance Lodge of Good lemplare (Sis. Annie Thomas, acting C. presiding), two candidates were admitted. The-Distnct Deputy and officers of the District Lodge paid an official visit, and were warmly welcomed. Harmony was indulged in, the 1 allowing contributing; —Bro. Johnson (song), Sis. MacFarlane (piano solo). Sis.' M'Gray (song), Bro. Wilkins (song), Sis. Lucas (song), Bro. Thomas (recitation), Bro. MacFar ane (song), and Bro. Beresford, of Fariane (song), and Bro. Bro. Beresford, of Lily of > alley Lodge, gave a short addrees on lemperance work. Bro. MacFarlane, D. responded on behalf of District Lodge, Bro. Beresford Lily of Valley, Bro. A. Johnson All Nations (Port Chalmers), Bro. Todd Hope of Dunedin, Bro. Thom Hope of jnversham, and Bro. Johnson St. Andrews (Portobello) for the visitors. A conversazione given by tho Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge on Tuesday was a most successful affair. Songs were given by tho fol-lowmg:-Mrs Morrison, Mr A. Sligo, jun., Miss Weffzol, Mr H. Outred, Mr Crane; a recitation by Miss Weitzel, n. mandoline solo by Mr C. Keir, and orchestral selections by Mr Briesrs’s orchestra. Mr J. West made an efficient accompanist at the concert and dance which followed. Forty couples joined in the dance, wwn o Va ,i> kfP*' U P till the early hours. Av L ' 3: Black, m moving a vote of thanks to the performers, thanked the ladies, to whom the lodge is greatly indebted. At the fortnightly meeting of Guiding Star Juvenile iemplo of Good Templars (the Disliict Superintendent and Sis. Strang, Assistant Superintendent, in charge). Bro. Todd, V.T. presided. Three candidates were initiated! Harmony was proceeded with, the following contributing:—Song, Bro. Ru&tcn; song, Sis. B. Davis; song, Bro. Childs; recitation, Sis. Rainham; duet, Sis. Todd piano, and Bro. Todd violin; song, Bro. Wentworth; song, Bro. Bush;_ and a reading, entitled ‘ Buy Your Own Cherries,’ by tho District Superintendent. Sis. Cameron, G.S.J.T., announced that ou Mafeking Day she had instituted the True Blue Juvenile Temple at Palmerston Sculi. Sis. M’Pherson and Sis. Eainham responded for tho Alliance. The latter offers a. prize tor the best essay written by a member, to be read at the next meeting. Sis. Strang gave an account of her visit to Outran), where the./ hed a most successful temple. The meeting was closed by singing the National Anthun. The Caversham Presbyterian Literary yj.d Debating Society met on Tuesday evening, the Rev. D. Dutton presiding. Mr V. Wilson, M.A., delivered a lecture on ‘The Buried Temples of Olympia.’ Several photographs, maps, and plans were used by the lecturer. 1 At the close he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his able address.
