THE COURTS.-TO-DAY.

CITY POLICE COURT. (Before Messrs A. G. Christopher and W. D. Hanlon, J.P.s.) Drunkenness.—A first offender was convicted and discharged. Margaret Spence was fined 20s, or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Assault and Robbery.—John Price, Ghas. Price, and Joseph Smith were charged with, on the 25rd inst., assaulting and robbing Thomas Jerome of about £5 in cash.—-The Sub-inspector stated that Jerome arrived in town by (he South express on tho evening of the 23rd inst. He had recently been working for Mr Donald M'Gregor at Pomahaka, and was paid off that morning with a cheque for £8 l'7s 6d. Jerome cashed the cheque at Clinton, where he paid an account for £2 10s 6d and 6s 2d for a railway ticket. On reaching town Jerome went to Mrs Lehman’s, in Maelnggan street, and afterwards visited the Wharf Hotel, where he met a friend. The three accused were in lue hotel at the time, the complainant shouting each of them a drink. Jerome and his friend next visited the Terminus Hotel, and later on the complainant went to the Auld Scotland Hotel, where the accused again picked him up. They all had a few drinks together, and at. length Jerome left, the hotel with John' Price, who was all the time persuading him to go away with him. The other two men followed them ont. and when near the corner of Messrs A. and T. Burt’s place the three of them knocked Jerome down and went through his pockets. The latter screamed out “ Murder!’’ and “Police!” and was pretty well exhausted when a Mr Olliver, employed at the limit Stables, came to his assistance. The three men bolted, and Mr Olliver, giving close, caught John Price, whom he detained until a policeman arrived. While the accused were robbing and [assaulting Jerome Mr Olliver went up to the men and asked what was the matter. John Price replied : ‘lt is all right, old man, we are only going through this fellow.” The Sub-inspector wished to say that it was a very praiseworthy action on Mr Olliver’s part in tackling a man like John Price and handing him over to the police.—After evidence the accused were committed for trial.

Truancy Act. —For failing to send her children to school, Ann Blair (four charges) was fined 4s under the Truancy Act. and \wo charges against Henry John Brookes were dismissed.
