THE GAELIC SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the society was held on Wednesday night in the Oddfellows Hall, Stuart street. Mr D. Munro presided, and read an extract in Gaelic from the Mactalla, recording the death in Canada of Archibald M'Lcan. the son of the Tir6e bard of that ilk, whose genealogy the article traced back in an unbroken line to "Mine Eachainn Ruaidh nan cath, traith Dhubhairt a thuit am blar Harlaw 'sa bhlwdhna 1411 (the son of Red Hector of the battles, the chief of Duart that fell at the battle of Harlaw in the year 1411). Not many n these davs could trace their descent so far back. Dr Gordon Macdonald, in the course of an address, gave some interesting details of- the life and works of the late Mary M'Pherson, the Skye poetess.- Referring to the Highlands generally, he observed that there were industries ' such as aluminium manufacturing which would utilise water power so plentifully in the hills of Scotland, and there had just been discovered in Ardnamurchan a deposit of iron, the working of which Mould revolutionise matters in that locality. The discovery of coal in other localities would also effect great changes. Dr Macdonald further gave a vivid description of a recent holiday, during which he had niet with several excellent Highlanders, from whom he received donations to put the finishing touches on the Glengarry monument. The concert which followed was of the usual liberal quality, and well sustained throughout. Mr A. Stronach was elected a member.
