REMARKABLE SUPERSTITION
The tidal began on February 00, in the Criminal Seetipn oi thel'District Court; of Father Belakieviez, the Catholic priest, at Kovno, in Russian Poland, who is charged with havin<r yi his fanatical zeal scourged' and maltreated some of his female parishioners, as a punishment for then: errors. The it was alleged,: wer£|a!§en doapn mto Ojf. the church, where, apart from the physical chastisemeßt inflicted on them, iheir superstitious fears 'were praci tised upon by means of apparitions representing death and the Devil. The Minister of Justice himself Was present in court during the trial. The accused was found guilty of having arbitrarily deprived eight persons of their pergonal freedom nby Using force against them. In five cases extenuating circumstances were allowed, and the prisoner was i sentenced to deprivation of the special rights and privileges attaching to his rank and position, and was ordered to settle; in the Government of Irkutsk. He is not to i«ave, even temporarily, the place of residence assigned to him before the expiration of two yean, and is also prohibited from choosing An-' other permanent residence in other part of Siberia for the period oleightyears.
