ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
THE SOUTHERN CROSS AT HOBART. Press Association—By Telegraph -Copyright. HOBART, November 28. The Southern Cross, with M. Borchgrevinok’s Antarctic expedition, has arrived from London. [The Southern Cross was built by Mr Colin Archer somewhat on the model of the Fram, and her captain, Jensen, is a Norwegian with ong experience of the Pul *r seas. She was fun ished by Fir G. Newnes. Lieutenant. Colbeck, H.N.R., is the first magnetic observer. He will be assisted by Mr Louis Bernacobl, of the Melbourne Observatory. The medical offie r is Dr Klovatad, of Christiania 1 nLe - sity. Mr Hausen, of the British Museum, and Mr Hugh Evans s-irve as zoologists and co‘lectors. M. Borchgrevinck, who is a Swede, was on board the whaler Antarctic when she visited these shores, and landed at Cape Adair, in South Victoria i-and. After renewing her mpply of coal at Hobart the Southern Cross will l«avo for tho Antarctic Circle, and will Idnd tho major portion of her crew of thirty men for the winter. They will form a camp, make short overland expeditions, and get acclimatised in readiness for a possible advance by stages to the geographical pole, distant some 1,200 miles. This is to be undertaken, if at all, not earlier than the spring of next year, when the ship, which is to winter at Hobart, will have retained wlh fresh provisions; but instead of it M. Borchgrevinox may take advantage of the break-up of the Ice to make a coasting trip.]
