A BISHOP ON COLONIAL LIFE.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY. November 28. Recent utterances by Bishop Thornton, of Ballarat, at the Church Congress, vehemently denouncing the low tone of life in cities and in the bush in Australia, have called down a storm of hostile criticism. The bishop also lashed out at journalism, the Bar, and legislators. The Australian Natives’ Association has wrathfully resented the imputations. The ‘ Argus ’ is of opinion that the diatribes do little harm to Victoria, and may do consider-i. able harm to the bishop’s character. The ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ questions the bishops facts, which leave him to choose hia horn of the dilemma. If he is right, his church is impotent; if he is wrong, he has traduced the people of Australia.
