BRIEF MENTION.
The inquiry into the alleged shilling of the South Ward (Auckland) roll was continued yesterday, ami some curious evidence, was forthcoming. It was resolved to propound a series of questions for the consideration of the city solicitor. Six hoys, for assaulting u Uhinaman al Auckland, were fined IBs each, with coals. As the assault was entirely unprovoked, the justices expressed regret that they could not order the boys to ho severely flogged, and until Hogging was allowed this sort of thing by pushes ” would continue. The Supreme Court was occupied at Christchurch yesterday hearing the charge against George M ‘Alpine of obtaining money under false pretences by means of an art union. Accused was found guilty and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. This was the last case in the criminal list. James Hartley, the missing second-hand dealer, who left Motutapu in an open boat for Auckland on the (5 r .h inst., is believed to have been drowned. The Commissioner of Customs has decided that graphophones, gramophones, kinetoBc'opes, and phonographs must f>ay a duty of 20 per cent, as fancy goods.
